There are many things in life that are met with celebration. There are some that most people celebrate such as a birthday or a wedding. There are others though, that don’t come around for just anyone. Today it seems like a huge feat to come up upon your 50th wedding anniversary. There don’t seem to be many who make it this far, and that can be because of death or divorce. This is actually something that is coming up for my grandparents and I am in awe of the lifetime they have built together.

Though my grandmother had a stroke many years ago, she is still with us. She doesn’t remember a lot of things, but she does remember us. She gets our names wrong, but she is usually pretty close. She calls me by my mom’s name, and that tells me that she knows who I am, but somewhere in there the wires are crossed. I’m not sure if she will realize what a milestone her 50th wedding anniversary will be, but I do know that she still loves my grandfather very much. You can often catch her looking at him in a way that says nothing other than love. I think the fact that they have been through so much and will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary says a lot about that look.

They have been through a lot. I remember when I was young I heard something that might have stopped their marriage from going any further and there would have never been able to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. My grandmother suspected my grandfather had cheated on her. In the end it came out that he and this woman were just friends, but I can understand why the friendship made my grandmother uncomfortable. That woman is still around, though my grandfather doesn’t see her anywhere. I don’t suspect she’ll be invited to the 50th wedding anniversary celebration.

I know this woman and my grandfather had feelings deeper than friendship, though apparently they never acted on them. The sad thing is that she still works right next door to where my grandparents live. She was a friend to my grandmother, which makes me very angry. I am almost tempted to send her some favors from the upcoming 50th wedding anniversary celebration, just to show her that she cannot hurt my grandmother again. That would be childish of me and I should let sleeping dogs lie, but that doesn’t mean it’s not tempted. Despite everything, I think the 50th wedding anniversary is going to be about more than grandparents. It’s going to be a reminder to us all that it is possible to stay together, you just have to be willing to work on it.

All milestones deserve to be celebrated and this includes long term commitments such as 50th anniversaries. Many times a place will have a special celebration for this event, as it is a milestone that many organizations could never fathom. It is something that shows that the company has been established and proven in their respective field. It is a rare feat that many companies have struggled for and usually only the elites have achieved. Purchasing a 50th anniversary gift for the founder of the company seems very appropriate.

In marriages, it is a milestone that is precious and holds special esteem by those that are wedded for this long. It shows that their love has been strong for half a century and that warrants a special 50th anniversary gift. In this case many people give something that is gold, something that is extra special, or something that is unique like a second honeymoon as a 50th anniversary gift.

Choosing a gift is something that can be a challenge for anyone and it should be something that is special for all those involved. At this point the marriage has been the foundation for a family that may extend to three generations and has reached to the lives of multiple people. This means that the 50th anniversary gift has to be something that will standout among the past gifts and should be something that is a symbol of the testament of their undying love. This is even truer in today’s day and age where marriage is taken lightly and so many unions are broken in tragedy.

In the modern world it is uncommon to find anything that has endured for 50 years and that alone warrants a special 50th anniversary gift for whatever it is. This is something that comes around only once and is second only to the 100th anniversary, yet this is something that is even rarer to behold.

Even in something like sports, such as the NBA where the 50th anniversary was presented to the fans with the 50 greatest players shown in their glory and each given a 50th anniversary gift that was to signify the appreciation that the NBA has in each of them. This is something that so few places have done, and yet there are even fewer that have achieved this standard. A company is impressive if it can last for ten years so the big 50 is something that is closer to a fairy tale. This is also something that is regrettably true in marriages as well. There are so many steps along the way to the big 50 and that is the true challenge for anything, to endure and prove that it was meant to be. Giving a 50th anniversary gift is a wonderful way to acknowledge this special event.
